Second Divine Liturgy in Famagusta Church

famagustaOn Sunday January 26, from 7.30 am to 10.30 am, a divine liturgy will be held in the church of Ayios Georgios (Exorinou) within the walls of Famagusta. The service, which will be led by the Bishopric of Constantia – Famagusta, is the second ceremony within the past few weeks held in Ayios Georgios, a church that remained inaccessible to the Greek Orthodox community for about half a century.
The first ceremony in 56 years took place only a month ago. The service was described as the largest gathering of the Greek-Cypriot faithful in the occupied territories since 1974.
The Bishop of Constantia-Famagusta, Vassilios, will lead the Divine Liturgy. Attending the service will be the Mayor of Famagusta, Alexis Galanos, along with members of the City Council.
The bishopric stated that once a month, buses from Ayios Demetrios church in Paralimni will drive people to Ayios Georgios (Exorino) of Famagusta to attend the Divine Liturgy on Sundays.
The church of Ayios Georgios in Famagusta was abandoned in 1957 because of inter-communal violence at the time. The church Committee and Famagusta’s Municipality have decided to hold occasional services in order to help in its preservation as an important piece of cultural heritage as well as a functioning church. Their aim is to bring it back to religious life.
The church was built during the 14th century but today operates as a concert hall. It is said to be one of the best preserved in the occupied territory of the Republic of Cyprus. However, the church requires extensive renovation since humidity has caused significant damage to the icons and frescoes.
