Following a nomination by the EPP, the head of Greece ‘s PACE delegation, and Former Minister of Foreign Affairs Dora Bakoyannis was unanimously voted in to chair the Council of Europe’s Committee on Political Affairs and Democracy. It is the first time that a Greek MP is elected to the position.
The Committee deals with any political matters that fall within the mandate of the Council of Europe, as well as with urgent political situations and crises that arise within member states.
Following the vote, Bakoyannis stated that the European plan “has wavered,” and that a lack of direction has created “a rift” between Northern and Southern Europe. Bakoyannis promised that “our Committee will expand its role, giving the chance for the voice of the Council of Europe to be heard in all directions.”
