MPs Denounce Sexist Behaviour in Greek Parliament

Greek_Parliament,During a meeting of the Equality Commission of the Greek Parliament, female MPs reported verbal gender-based attacks and sexist attitudes.
The Equality Commission pointed out that during the last months the incidents that are related to derogatory and sexist comments toward female MPs’ opinions or even physical appearance have increased. Some members of the Commission proposed the implementation of fines for such cases.
A New Democracy member, said that she felt deeply insulted when a male MP referred to a woman MP as a “garter,” noting that it was the most insulting thing that a man could say. The president of the Commission Katerina Papakosta argued that it is unacceptable for parliamentary colleagues to behave in a sexist manner. She added that the value of decency in a parliamentary debate can’t be questioned or downgraded by gender-based attacks.
The Commission unanimously decided to ask the Greek Parliament to include their proposals in the Code of Conduct.
