Greek Researchers Discover New State of Matter

idrima-texnologias-kritiAccording to the Foundation for Research and Technology (FORTH), Greek and Slovenian scientists discovered a new state of matter. Their discovery  may have future practical applications to materials used in modern electronic devices.
The research teams from the Institute of Electronic Structure and Laser in Crete, Greece and the Jozef Stefan Institute in Ljubljana, Slovenia, published their work in the scientific journal “Nature Communications.”
Slovenian and Greek scientists discovered a new inhomogeneous state of matter which was produced in certain magnetic systems of strong antiferromagnetic interactions. The scientists composed a polycrystalline metal oxide system under highly controlled conditions in a laboratory. The use of a synchrotron X-ray light source showed the deviations from the homogeneous static average structure and revealed the electronic complexity of the system.
According to FORTH, phase separation in chemically homogenous, strongly correlated electron systems is a crucial parameter that can lead to controlled functional properties of materials, such as high-temperature superconductivity of copper oxide of the element technetium and giant magnetoresistance in manganites.
