Organizers and thousands of participants in the Xanthi Carnival in Greece, will be dancing to the rhythm of the Mundial Championship. The carnival is the peak of the 49th Thracian Folk Festival, and it will take place from February 14 to March 2, with a large carnival parade in the main streets of the city.
Xanthi, once again will be flooded with colors and music. The theme for this year’s carnival was inspired by the biggest football celebration, the Mundial Championship. The carnival organizers want every participant to “travel” to the ends of the world.
This year, during the 49th Thracian Folk Festival, children from elementary schools in Xanthi will put on a parade for the first time. Young carnival participants will take part in the “Mundialito” accompanied by their parents; after parading the main streets of Xanthi, they will head to the main square, which will be filled with surprises.
Three popular Greek artists, Dimitris Starovas, Myronas Stratis and Isaias Matiaba, as well as various music ensembles will contribute to the celebrations throughout the Thracian Folk Festival.
“Putting all difficulties aside, we did not compromise the quality of the Festival; we made the promotion of our cultural identity a priority. Our cultural identity will not be touched by any economic problem,” said the mayor of Xanthi, Michalis Stylianidis.
President of the Municipality’s Cultural Center, Manolis Varoufakis noted: “in these difficult times that Greek society faces, the Carnival of Xanthi will provide a short break of joy and excitement. People will be able stop thinking, at least for a little while, about the harsh reality they are faced with. Our active participation and the collaboration with many institutions and associations guarantee the success of the Thracian Folk Festival.”
