18 year-old Greek Student Commits Suicide

teen_suicide_depression-teen-and-gunThe suicide of an 18 year-old student has shocked Greece. Greek police authorities found the dead body of the young man in his house, in Volos, central Greece, on Tuesday noon.
The Police investigation showed that the 18 year-old student shot himself with his father’s rifle. According to his friends reports, during the last months he was facing some serious problems and he had confided to them of his intentions to commit suicide. However, the exact reason that led him to suicide are not yet known.
His body was immediately transferred to Volos hospital while the necropsy report is expected within the next hours. Officers of the Police Department of Magnesia,  are responsible for the preliminary investigation of the case.
Before the outbreak of the financial crisis in 2008, Greece was among the countries with the lowest suicide rates. However lately, suicides cases have increased not only among adults but also among the young population. The financial difficulties that their families are dealing with, as well as anxiety for their future and the high rates of unemployment may lead many teenagers to depression and often to suicide.
According to the Greek Health Ministry, during the last years, apart from suicides, an increase in attempted suicides and use of anti-depressant medication have been recorded.
