Greek police said on Feb. 19 they had arrested 12 people in Attica in connection with an alleged illegal fuel smuggling ring and were questioning another 30.
The President of bunkering company Eteka, Giorgos Spanos, who is also the President of the Atromitos soccer club in the Athens neighborhood of Peristeri, was taken into custody on the charges.
According to early police reports, among those arrested were two ministry employees, Eteka staff members, gas station owners and soccer club officials.
It was the latest in a long-running series of scandals involving Greek soccer club officials, with unrelated charges including match-fixing and bribery. Despite a number of well-publicized arrests, there have been few prosecutions.
Authorities allege the ring had smuggled thousands of tons of illegal fuel to the market.
