The 100 million euros that the Greek public sector has managed to gather from controls in cases of large fraud and specifically from remittances to foreign banks and to off shore companies, seems to be like a drop in the ocean of debts. Someone can easily deduct the conclusion that the battle the Greek government is fighting against tax evasion is not enough, since the huge lists of people who tax evade are estimated to be owing Greece tens of billions of euros. It is also indicative that the controls of the names included in the Lagarde list have just begun, after the intervention of the Financial Advocates, which started handing out cases to the Greek tax authority.
The Greek Ministry of Finance after a meeting with the Prime Minister Antonis Samaras on Sunday afternoon announced that in relation to remittances abroad:

  • The initial processing of 54 thousand cases revealed that about 25 thousand of them demanded further investigation. Letters have been sent to taxpayers related to these cases urging them to provide evidence of justification on those remittances. Cases in which the Greek tax authority controls have been completed saved the Greek government over 25 million euros.
  • The Financial and Economic Crime Unit (SDOE) continues the scrutinizing control of the Lagarde list cases while the General Secretariat of Public Revenue after the recent prosecution orders proceeds in fiscal control of some of these cases.
  • Similar actions are being implemented on the occasion of control of the offshore companies. So far, the result of cases in which the tax controls have already been completed saved the Greek government more than 70 million euros.
