Greek Collector Dies Leaving Behind Major Art Collection

Parthenis - KalypsoGreece ’s greatest art collector Giannis Perdios recently passed away leaving behind his remarkable collection.
He was born in Alexandria of Egypt and was a real cosmopolitan and an obsessive art collector. His friends admitted that Perdios had dedicated his life and his fortune to enriching his collection with remarkable artworks from all over the world. He participated in important art auctions worldwide, bidding tremendous sums to acquire a painting or another artwork. A friend of his said that Perdios would stop at nothing in order to buy an artwork that he wanted and nobody could change his mind. He was even imprisoned once for alleged involvement in an art theft scandal.
Perdios lived in a big house in Palaio Psychiko, a suburb of Athens, where he kept his art collection consisting of major Greek artworks dated from the 17th to the 20th century. Among his artworks were paintings from renowned Greek painters such as Parthenis, Tsarouchis, Vryzakis and Galanis. According to art experts and auctioneers, the value of his collection is estimated at more than 10 million euros.
After Perdios’ death his house was sealed off by the Greek Ministry of Culture and the Greek National Gallery for fear of theft. The future of his art “treasures” is currently unknown. Perdios has left a will, but because of the collection’s value, the inheritance tax will be extremely high for his relatives. The Ministry of Culture hopes that they will decide to donate some of the major Greek artworks to the National Gallery.
