New Poll on Upcoming Greek Elections

poll2A recent poll conducted on behalf of Greek pollster Metron Analysis for the newspaper “To Ethnos tis Kiriakis,” reveals marginal differences in voting intentions with regards to Greece’s two leading parties, New Democracy and SYRIZA, with the main opposition party currently in the lead in both local and European elections.
In the voting intentions for May’s elections to the European Parliament, New Democracy gets 17.6% of the votes, SYRIZA 18.8%, PASOK 4.4%, Independent Greeks 3.6%, Golden Dawn 6.1%, DIMAR 2.9% and KKE 5.2%, while 36.5% of voters still haven’t made up their mind.
However, according to the voting estimates for the EU elections, New Democracy gets 27.7%, SYRIZA 29.7%, PASOK 6.9%, Independent Greeks 5.7%, Golden Dawn 9.6%, DIMAR 4.6%, KKE 8.2% and 7.6% is claimed by other parties.
With regard to local parliamentary elections, voting intentions are as follows: New Democracy 19.8%, SYRIZA 20.3%, PASOK 4.5%, Independent Greeks 4.1%, Golden Dawn 6.8%, DIMAR 3.2%, KKE 6%, other parties 4.8% and swing vote 30.5%.
The voting estimates on the parliamentary elections, however, reveal some changes, with New Democracy getting 28.5% of the votes, SYRIZA 29.2%, PASOK 6.4%, Independent Greeks 5.9%, Golden Dawn 9.7%, DIMAR 4.7%, KKE 8.7%, while 6.9% is claimed by other parties.
Although the current Greek PM, Antonis Samaras, is still considered by 36% to be a more suitable prime minister than Alexis Tsipras, who gets 17%, SYRIZA is expected to win the upcoming elections, polling ten per cent more than New Democracy (47% vs. 37%).
Meanwhile, the communist party of Greece (KKE) shows a big increase in support: its January approval rating of just 5%, has jumped to 8.7%.
In the race for the Athens mayor’s office, the poll gives a clear advantage to Giorgos Kaminis, who is the current PASOK-endorsed mayor of the city.
According to the poll, Kaminis gets 23% of votes, followed by Aris Spiliotopoulos (New Democracy) with 14%, Gavriil Sakellaridis (SYRIZA) with 13%, Ilias Kasidiaris (Golden Dawn) with 11%, Nikitas Kaklamanis (independent) with 9%, Nikos Sofianos (KKE) with 6%, Vasilis Kapernaros (Independent Greeks) with 5% and Gregory Vallianatos (Liberal Alliance) with 3%.
