Changes to Pre-election Period of Greek Local Elections

On the basis of the amendment proposed to Parliament by the Greek Minister of Interior, Yiannis Michelakis, the campaign period for the Greek local elections will be reduced from two to one month.
According to Yiannis Michelakis‘ amendment, which was included in the Greek Ministry of Public Order’s bill concerning the restructuring of the Greek police, “the pre-election period will be considered to be the 30 days preceding the day of the vote of the first round at the local elections.”
The same amendment clarifies that this provision is not connected to the other provisions of the law 3870/2010 on the election expenses of candidates and coalitions of candidates concerning, among other things, limits and restrictions on financing.
Note that this amendment also applies to restrictions on candidate appearances in the media.
