OECD Report: 18% of Greeks Suffering Poverty

≈ÀÀ¡ƒ¡ 2 ◊—œÕ…¡  —…”«” - ”’””…‘…œ ¡–œ—ŸÕ  ¡… ¡”‘≈√ŸÕA recent OECD report on poverty revealed that the 17.9% of Greeks can’t afford to buy food – more than in countries with lower per capita income such as Brazil and China. The OECD report, entitled “Society at a Glance 2014”, details huge income losses incurred by Greeks during the period 2007-2012, averaging 4,400 euros per person – the highest among OECD countries and four times the eurozone average.
According to the report, poverty in Greece is due to an “explosion” of unemployment, especially among younger people, and an “ill-prepared” social protection system. As reported, since 2008, total spending on social protection and health fell by 18%. The OECD also revealed that only Greece and Italy don’t provide a nationwide minimum-income benefit.
Data concerning employment showed that the number of “jobless” families has almost doubled, with one in five Greek adults living in a household where no member is working. The report states that any economic recovery is not expected to end to Greece’s social crisis quickly. The OECD is urging the Greek authorities to take  appropriate measures and to promote structural reforms in order to cover the needs of the vulnerable social groups, especially long-term unemployed and poor households.
