Greek Agriculture Water Use Way Over EU Average

Crop IrrigationThe occasion of World Water Day on March 22 offers a timely opportunity to take stock of a potentially serious problem in Greece: unfettered water consumption.
According to studies conducted by the Greek Institute of Geology and Mineral Exploration Management (IGMEM), Greece uses the highest percentage of its water on crop irrigation, compared to other Mediterranean countries such as Portugal and Spain. Although water shortage is not a problem for the time being in Greece, 86% of its water is pumped into agriculture, whereas the EU average is just 24%.
The Greek environmental organization Mediterranean SOS stresses that Greece needs to halve its water consumption, without depriving society or increasing the infrastructure costs. It, among other voices, proposes restructuring crop usage around the specific needs of each region, as well as a conversion to organic agriculture and the implementation of new technologies in the agricultural domain.
However, since 2000, Greece, along with the other EU member-states, has been required to implement the EU Water Framework Directive, which sets water-quality standards and pollution limits for reservoirs, rivers and even fountains.
