Half-Million Greeks now on Social Electricity Tariffs

dei

More than half a million Greeks have joined the social residential electricity tariffs offered by Greece’s Public Power Corporation (DEI). According to the data provided to the Greek Parliament by Deputy Minister of Environment, Energy and Climate Change Asimakis Papageorgiou, as of December 31, 2013, about 534,808 people had switched onto the social residential tariff.
The same data also revealed that many eligible for the tariff have, for various reasons, not yet submitted applications to be included in the scheme.
In response to a question from independent MP Nikos Nikolopoulos, Papageorgiou said his ministry is processing a series of regulations to ensure electric supply to vulnerable social groups.
He also highlighted the contributions of municipalities’ own welfare systems and the Church, and urged committees be set up to confront pressing social issues.
