Exhibition on Istanbul in Athens

istanbulIstanbul is a city full of contradictions, a crossroad of civilizations where tradition fuses with modernity. Such is the theme of the work by two Athens-raised, Istanbul-based friends, painter Olga Alexopoulou and writer Alex Massavetas, whose exhibition opens at Athens‘ IANOS  bookstore on April 1.  The two will present the different ways they experience life  in Istanbul.
Olga Alexopoulou, permanent resident of Istanbul since 2006, will present her everyday life in her favorite city, maps of its historic neighborhoods focus on the most important monuments. Alexopoulou, is attempting for the first time to explain her relationship with her “foster” homeland and the reasons she lives there. The painter is trying to reflect the character of a metropoli that is constantly evolving.
Massavetas, permanent resident of Istanbul since 2003 and author of the book “Constantinople: The City of Absentees”, presents Istanbul through the lens of the non-Muslim ethnic groups that inhabited it. His books and photos reflect nostalgia for a happier past. At the same time he focuses on the present, where the city is desperately seeking its identity while going through rapid changes.
