Unemployment in Greece Still Highest in EU

unemployment_GreeceDespite a slight drop in unemployment in December in Greece, the proportion of young people and females without work remains the highest in the European Union, data provided by Eurostat has revealed.
Unemployment in Greece rose to 27.5%, compared to 27.6% in November: 24.5% of men and 31.6% of women had no work, while a majority  58.3% of those under-25 were jobless.
The second highest rate of unemployment can be found in Spain, at 25.6%. The lowest unemployment rates were recorded in Austria with 4.8%, in Germany with 5.1% and in Luxembourg with 6.1%.
The three countries which recorded the highest unemployment increase in one year are Cyprus (from 14.7% to 16.7%), Greece (from 26.3% to 27.5%) and Italy (from 11.8% to 13%). Hungary, however, was the country with the highest decrease in unemployment rate (from 11.2% to 8.3%).
On an annual basis, unemployment increased in 11 member-states, decreased in 15 and remained stable in Romania and Sweden.
Unemployment in the eurozone remained stable at 11.9% in February, while the jobless rate across the wider EU contracted to 10.6% from 10.7% in January.
In February, the EU had 25.92 million unemployed, 18.97 million of whom were in the Eurozone. Within a year, unemployment decreased by 166,000 people in the eurozone and by 619,000 across the EU.
The highest rates of youth unemployment were recorded in Greece (58.3%) and Spain (53.6%) while the lowest were recorded in Germany (7.7%) and Austria (9.4%).
