Cyprus: Three Politicians Implicated in Cheap Loan Scandal

syllourisAccording to the Commission on Institutions, Merit and the Commissioner for Administration, three former and current MPs of the Cyprus Parliament had received loans from a specific Cypriot bank at unusually favorable terms. The disclosure of the names was made by the Chairman of the Committee on Institutions, Dimitris Syllouris.
The three politicians implicated in the recent scandal are Aristophanes Georgiou, Prodromos Prodromou and Sophocles Chatziyiannis.
All three had been informed by Mr. Syllouris that he would proceed with the disclosure of their data.
Those three are part of the investigation in to loans with overly favorable terms or without adequate reassurances.
However, the chairman of the Committee on Institutions clarified that it does not seem like those three politicians have received preferential treatment regarding their loans but for ethical reasons and after the noise created around this issue, they started being in the public eye.
Meanwhile, Cyprus Green Party leader Giorgos Perdikis said yesterday that he is willing to publish on Facebook any names he identifies in the documents submitted to the Commission on Insitutions, and duly named the three politicians above.
Moreover, the Green Party believes that it is time for transparency and informing the citizens about the games that were played behind their backs.
It is time, he says, to name and shame, and for citizens to learn of the unequal treatment they received from the banks as ordinary citizens.
