Nine Migrant Traffickers Arrested in Crete

Greek police

Police in Heraklion, Crete, have located several safe houses where illegal immigrants were held by a human-trafficking ring. A total of nine – one Greek and eight Syrians  – traffickers were arrested for holding 47 immigrants captive, among them young children and one woman.
The immigrants were found locked and guarded and among them were eleven minors. According to Heraklion police chief Michalis Karamalakis, the migrants came from across Greece and had paid traffickers between 2,000 and 3,500 euros per head so they could be taken from Athens to Heraklion and then smuggled to Italy.
The suspects, all aged between 28 and 45, are thought to be part of an international trafficking network. The questioning continues and the nine traffickers are expected to be brought before the prosecutor of Heraklion.
