EU Ministers to Meet in Athens to Discuss Syria, Ukraine

parliamentEuropean Union foreign ministers will gather in Athens for an informal two-day meeting to discuss the situations in Syria and Ukraine. Evangelos Venizelos, Greece’s Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister will chair the summit.
The Ukrainian government as well as Western leaders have expressed concern over the deployment of tens of thousands of Russian forces near the Ukrainian border. Earlier this week, EU officials stated they were examining plans to join the International Monetary Fund’s planned loan package for Ukraine. The IMF’s executive board is expected this month to decide upon assistance worth up to 18 billion dollars, while the EU is considering a further 10 billion dollars.
The EU ministers will meet in Athens early on Friday afternoon, and again on Saturday. On Saturday at 12.15 p.m., Evangelos Venizelos will give a joint press conference with Catherine Ashton, the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.
