Probe Finds Evidence of Torture at Nigrita

kareli1-300x171All the prison guards who tortured Albanian inmate Ilia Kareli in Nigrita, Greece, have confessed and expressed regret for their actions, and asked to be released.
Judge Georgia Toutountzi listened carefully to the statements given by the prison guards. They are accused of torturing to death Kudret Kume, known in Greece as Ilia Kareli. According to the Greek media, seven other guards will give their testimonies on Monday.
To hide the crime, Kareli was tortured in a cell without cameras for more than two-and-a-half hours, after which guards pretended he was conscious as they dragged him to his cell, even though they knew they had already killed him.
Forensics experts have asked Greek officials why tissue has been removed from the forearm and fingers. The heart is thought to have been removed during the autopsy.
Ilie Kareli, 42, died in solitary confinement on March 27 several hours after being transferred to Nigrita from Malandrino jail in central Greece, where he had stabbed a prison guard to death after being refused furlough to visit his critically ill mother.
Recent developments have stirred tension in prisons across the country with, mostly Albanian, inmates threatening to retaliate over Kareli’s death.
