Greek Seamen Suspend Strikes for Easter Holiday

limania_apergiaStriking Greek seamen will suspend any further industrial action to avoid disrupting ferry and freight services during the Easter holiday, their union said Wednesday.
The Panhellenic Seamen’s Federation (PNO) announced that all passenger ship routes will be serviced as of 6 a.m. on Thursday, April 10, after the public and private sectors’ general strike held on April 9.
However, PNO said in its announcement that Greek seamen will remain vigilant, despite the recent collective labor agreement struck with employers of coastal navigation vessels and ferries.
Greek seamen have been protesting against several provisions of the new multi-bill passed by the Greek government,  in particular articles concerning labor contracts for workers on tourist vessels. They are also trying to tackle high unemployment in their sector and avoid any further decrease to their pensions and social security benefits.
