January Jobless 26.7% in Greece: Up On Year, Down on Month

Unemployment in Greece fell to 26.7% in January 2014, according to official data released on April 10 by the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT), down from December 2013 but up from last January.
The total number of jobless in January was 1,317,000 people, 17,446 (1.3%) fewer than in December but 6,815 (0.5%) more than January 2013. Data for employment and economic active/inactive populations show corresponding but not entirely correlated changes over both time frames.
According to ELSTAT, female unemployment stood at 30.2% while youth unemployment rose to 56.8%, down from 604% a year previously because of special work programs. In terms of regions, the highest rates of unemployment were found in Epirus and West Macedonia (28.6%), Macedonia and Thrace (28.1%) and Attica (27.3%).
