A Rare Glimpse Inside Divided Cyprus' Lost-in-Time Zone

cyprus_UN-1A disused airport stands like a ghost from another era. Shops that once thrived lay abandoned, and for some decades now. Welcome to the UN buffer zone in Cyprus, where the time stood still in 1974, and has barely flinched since.
Reuters photographer Neil Hall travelled to Cyprus to visit the UN neutral territory that was established 40 years ago, following the Greek military coup in Nicosia and subsequent Turkish invasion of the north of the island.
The zone, also referred to as the ‘Green Line’, occupies around three percent of the island, and is effectively a militarized nature reserve these days, but contains abandoned homes, closed businesses and the disused Nicosia International Airport. Hall’s photos have been published widely, most notably by UK newspaper The Guardian.
