2,000 Greek Civil Servants Stashing Money Overseas

cash-1

Slowly but surely, an investigation into some 54,000 money transfers from crisis-stricken Greece to foreign banks during the economic recession has identified around 2,000 civil servants who seem to have sent money overseas – sometimes as much as 700,000 euros.
Transfers of 200,000, 500,000 and 700,000 euros have been identified; amounts impossible to justify on an average civil servant’s wage of 1,500 and 2,000 euros.
About 2,000 civil servants are being investigated, mainly from Attica and around Athens as well as the Cyclades, mostly serving in tax authorities and urban planning services.
Investigations are also taking place in western Macedonia, Crete and Thessaly. Civil servants unable to justify their overseas remittances will face disciplinary consequences and possibly dismissal, beyond whatever the tax authorities decide to do.
