Greek Blooms Yield World-beating Saffron

Kozani saffronIran may have a higher production volume but the better quality of Greek saffron is constantly strengthening its reputation.
Greece ranks first among European countries for production of saffron, the most expensive spice in the world. At least 150,000 crocus flowers are needed for one kilo of dried stigmas, which is the part of plant used to make saffron.
Based on the internationally recognized ISO procedure (3632 TS) it was assessed that saffron from Kozani, Greece has larger concentrations of crocin of picrocrocin and safranal, making its coloring power 66 degrees higher than the minimum international standard and thus placing it right at the top of the list.
Director of Kozani Crocus Products SA, Angelos Markou, said the company’s products are available in 2500 locations across Greece and in 23 countries abroad, including the gulf states, Australia, Japan, Hong Kong, USA and Canada, as well as in European markets including Cyprus, UK, Germany, Spain, Bulgaria, Denmark, Poland, Czech Republic, Switzerland, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Russia and Slovenia.
“Our development effort on a global level is continuous. We are constantly searching for new markets that match the profile of the products and have an appropriate distribution network,” Markou said, adding that the distribution network includes pharmacies, organic shops, delicatessens, hotels, restaurants and cafés and spas.
