Greek Police Arrest Seven For Football Hooliganism and Fish

toumbaGreek Police arrested seven people on Wednesday in Thessaloniki, north Greece for alleged participation in the hooliganism that marred the feisty – and fishy – Greek Cup semi-final between PAOK and Olympiakos.
The suspects allegedly threw Molotov cocktails at the Greek police officers outside PAOK’s stadium, which was met with tear-gas amid serious clashes.
Among those arrested is a PAOK fan accused of dumping a crate of 3,000 dead fish on the visiting Olympiakos bench, a stunt that delayed a tense Greek Cup semi-final for more than an hour. Olympiakos’ home ground is in Athens’ port of Piraeus, and its supporters are nicknamed “anchovies.” All seven suspects are expected to go before the General Prosecutor.
The game was repeatedly halted by brawls on the pitch, and three players were sent off in a nervy encounter. Adding to the hostile atmoshere, PAOK fans lit a volley of flares, several of which were lobbed on the pitch and towards Olympiakos’s players and bench.
PAOK won 1-0 to overturn its 2-1 deficit from the first leg in Piraeus thanks to a goal by Stefanos Athanasiadis two minutes into the second half and will face Panathinaikos in the final at Athens’ Olympic Stadium on Sunday, April 26.
