German Paper Reports on Unpaid Work in Greece

young- migrationA recent article in German daily Der Spiegel, entitled Warum Jannis auch ohne Lohn arbeitet (‘Why is Yannis working without a salary?’) addresses the problem of unpaid work in Greece.
The newspaper told the story of 32 year-old Yannis, who after many years of unemployment punctuated only by occasional work in the fields, managed to find an energy-efficiency job subsidized by the European Union to the tune of just 400 euros per month, although bureaucracy prevented him from receiving even this little money, although he imagines he be paid just in time for May’s European elections.
Yannis is certainly not an exception, for according to figures from trade union GSEE, more than one million salaried employees – from sailors to doctors – are going unpaid. “One in two companies do not pay their employees on time,” says Yiannis Kouzis, associate professor of social policy at Athens’ Panteion University.
Unemployment in combination with unpaid work have resulted in many young people leaving Greece for countries such as Canada, Australia, Germany or the U.S.A in search of a better life. However, the causes for migration are not exclusively economic. Many young Greeks working abroad admit that they are attracted not only by bigger salaries but also by the better quality of life and career developement prospects. For the majority, a return to Greece is not in their immediate plans.
