Papaconstantinou: IMF Did Not Demand Debt Relief

Ecofin council meeting at Luxembourg EU HeadquaterIn a statement issued on Tuesday, former Greek finance minister Giorgos Papakonstantinou denied that former IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn ever insisted on restructuring Greek debt as part of the bailout deal of May 2010.
“Strauss-Kahn called me to a meeting at his office at 7 a.m. on April 24, 2010. [ECB President Jean-Claude] Trichet and [European Economic and Monetary Affairs Commissioner Olli] Rehn were also present to finalize the details of the program,” said Papakonstantinou in his statement.
“There, Trichet and Rehn strictly ruled out any discussion about debt restructuring. Strauss-Kahn was in total agreement with them.”
According to Greek media, Papakonstantinou had previously informed Trichet that he was planning on asking for Greece’s debt to be restructured.
However, Trichet responded by warning the Greek government to not make such a move as it would result in ECB not providing local banks with enough liquidity.
