Wealthy Greeks Claiming Social Benefits

wealthyIt appears that the avarice in Greece has exceeded every limit as many wealthy Greeks are applying for the social dividend benefit of 500 euros. At the same time thousands of applications by impoverished people are rejected as they might not meet the necessary requirements.
The Greek authorities found out that 500 citizens with a property of more that 500,000 euros, 900 people with property of more than 50,000 euros and 140 people with assets amounting to 100,000 euros have applied for the social dividend. Some of the most outrageous cases are:

  • A couple with a family income of 102,000 euros, and a realty of 2,300,000 euros  living in a 230 sq.m. house.
  • A family of five from Athens with an interest income of 50,000 and an earned income of 110,000 euros, applied for a 996 euros allowance.
  • A couple that declared an income of 23,000 euros in order to receive the allowance but it was revealed that they had a yacht worth 230,000 euros in their possession.

The General Secretariat of Information Systems (GSIS) has announced that it has received 312,000 applications so far. The social dividend which starts from 500 euros, increases according to the applicant’s asset status. Of the 312,000 applications submitted, 70,000 have been pre-approved, while 111,000 were rejected  and a further 132,000 are being processed. About 74,000 uniformed officers will receive the benefit automatically.
