Coalition MPs Furious Over Papandreou-Kouvelis Appearance

papandreou kouvelis_b2Plans by former Greek prime minister and PASOK party leader George Papandreou to appear at an Athens book launch next Monday alongside Fotis Kouvelis, the leader of the Democratic Left (DIMAR) party who quit the government coalition of New Democracy and PASOK last June over the closure of Greek public broadcaster ERT, have infuriated MPs of both ruling parties.
“We are living in the land of the absurd,” Greek Health Minister and New Democracy MP Adonis Georgiadis said of the actions of Papandreou, who has recently become extremely critical of the government’s financial measures, despite being in charge when Greece first requested international support in 2010.
“I’m sure that in a while, Mr. Papandreou will be selling anti-memorandum rhetoric like Mr. Kammenos,” Georgidias added, referring to the leader of the staunchly anti-bailout, right-wing Independent Greeks (ANEL), Panos Kammenos.
PASOK MP Michalis Kassis, who in 2012 quit PASOK over austerity measures before rejoining the party, was also critical of Papandreou in comments on MEGA TV channel. “He is doing great harm to PASOK,” Kassis said, noting that instead of supporting the PASOK-backed center-left movement Elia, several former ministers who had been close to Papandreou have sided with DIMAR. “All that is left is for him to express his support for DIMAR, too,” Kassis added.
Couple of weeks ago, the former Greek PM voted against an article in an omnibus bill of major reforms passed by Parliament to address the new framework on the recapitalization of Greece’s banks, which has caused division within the ruling coalition.
