Environmental groups have issued an emergency warning on behalf of the endangered sea turtle species Caretta Caretta, which is about to enter its egg-laying period, with one of its main Peloponnese nesting sites, Kyparissiakos Bay, seriously at risk. Although Greece has been hauled before European courts by the European Commission for neglecting to protect the endangered species, authorities still fail to implement protective measures. Twelve environmental organizations including Arctouros, Archelon, Mesogeios SOS, Kallisto, Greenpeace, Medasset, MOM and WWF are calling upon the Ministry of Environment, Energy and Climate Change to face squarely up to its responsibilities and take all necessary measures to protect the sea turtles and the environmentally sensitive regions.
