Conference Venues in Greece Emptying

According to a survey conducted by the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA), Greece ranks 38th among the countries that organize and host the most conferences. This is four places lower than in 2012, when Greece was in the 34th place.
Greece’s conference tourism appears to be shrinking rapidly. By the end of 2013, only 100 conferences took place in Greek cities, with the corresponding number in 2012 being 114 conferences.
In anticipation of this year’s expected rise in tourism during summer, the Hellenic Association of Professional Congress Organizers (HAPCO) stated that “conference organization is not an easy task and requires special treatment and targeted actions.”
Athens held 49 conferences placing it in 47th, while in 2012 it ranked 40th after hosting 52 conferences. Thessaloniki was in the 219th place in 2013, hosting only 10 conferences; a significantly lower ranking than in 2012, when 19 conferences were organized in the city, placing it in the 117th spot.
