Mayor of Elliniko Prosecuted for Breach of Duty

mayor-ellinikoChristos Kortzidis, the mayor of Elliniko,  southeastern Athens, Greece has been prosecuted for breach of duty in the case of the fatal amusement park accident that cost the life of a 13-year-old boy.

The prosecution is based on a civil service inspectors’ report, according to which the municipality had leased the site to the operators of the amusement park illegally. The report showed that the operators of the fun fair were using an area of 2,450 square meters instead of the 700 square meters they had paid to rent. The municipality is also accused of not setting up a committee that would examine the facilities and that would approve the operating authorization.

A 13-year-old boy was killed while his 9-year-old sister seriously injured when strong winds blew a floating plastic cylinder they were in and threw it about 30m away.

Apart from the mayor of Elliniko, the Greek manager of the amusement park, an Italian man who rented him equipment and two Bangladeshi workers are being accused of the boy’s death.

Meanwhile, Kortzidis is claiming his re-election in the second round of the Greek municipal and regional elections on May 25. In the first round he came second with 33.51% of the votes while his rival was ranked first with 43.71%.
