Greek Government Offers Dutch Royal Family Private Beach

private beachThe Greek government gave permission to the royal family of Netherlands to acquire a private beach and to illegally build a dock in the region of Ermioni, southern Greece. The royal family of Netherlands has also a villa in the area, which was bought two years ago by the Dutch state.
The Greek government claimed that this decision would serve the public interest. However, local residents have strongly opposed the government’s decision saying that the Greek coastline cannot be owned by another state. Locals have expressed their fears that other property holders with political influence will also request private beaches which could gradually lead to the abolition of the free use of the beach by the citizens.
The access to the royal beach is impossible for local residents. They have reported that they cannot even reach the free part of the beach. According to a resident, when he and his children tried to reach the beach they were questioned by a security guard while they were under constant surveillance the whole time they were there.
The Dutch royal family is expected to arrive in Greece in the middle of August and despite the protests of the residents, works 0n the beach are in progress so that everything will be ready for the arrival of the royal family.
