Sheep Export from Crete to Libya

The fourth live sheep export from the Greek island of Crete to Libya is in progress. On Wednesday, July 2nd, 2,500 sheep will be transported by a special type of ship to a Libyan port.

According to experts, Cretan sheep are very similar to those reared in Libya, while a large amount of livestock was wiped out in the war operations after the fall of Gaddafi.

60 Cretan sheep herders are satisfied and optimistic about the new export “gate” between the two regions.

“We do whatever is possible in order to encourage this attempt and to support the local economy and the sheep herders of Crete,” they stated.

The livestock carrier which is going to be used for the live export of sheep is a special type of vessel with all the appropriate requirements, while the whole process of the export will be carried out under the strict supervision of the Port, Customs and Police authorities.
