Another paradox has made its appearance in Greece. Despite the serious financial crisis which has affected many households and left many Greeks unemployed, the car sales increased in June.
More specifically, the registrations of new passenger vehicles reached 8,000. According to figures from the Association of Motor Vehicles Importers Representatives (AMVIR), the number of registered passenger vehicles in June amounted to 7,964 compared to 5,648 in June 2013 (increase of 41%). In May 2014 the number of registered passenger vehicles amounted to 7,459.
During the period January-June 2014 registered cars reached 37,469 compared to 30,364 in the same period in 2013, recording an increase of 23.4%. June was the eighth consecutive month in increased car sales.
The rise in car sales is mainly attributed to the slight growth of the Greek economy. Consumers are currently more confident in proceeding with big purchases. Moreover, many consumers replace large engine capacity cars with smaller diesel cars in order to reduce fuel costs and avoid high taxation.
During the first semester of 2014 Toyota leads sales with 11.2%, while Nissan is second with 9.8% followed by Opel with 9.1%, Volkswagen with 8.9% and Fiat with 5.7%.
