Athens Medical School on Strike

A few days after the end of continuous strike action at the Athens Technical University, that almost jeopardized this semester for its students, the Medical School of Athens’ employees General Assembly decided to shut down the School.
As the Union of its employees announced, they protest against the abolition of security guards, the layoff of cleaning staff, the transformation of its contract workers to free-lancers as well as the mobility scheme imposed on all of its administrative employees that are set to lose their jobs. They fear that the future operation of the School is threatened.
They have decided to close down the school until July 11, from 7 am to 10 am, while the administration offices will operate only twice a week, Monday and Friday from 11 am to 1 pm.
A potential crisis for hundreds of students appeared to have been averted on Wednesday after administrative staff at the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) halted nearly three weeks of strike action.
The protests, by staff who have been inducted into a troika-imposed mobility scheme for the civil service, had threatened to jeopardize the summer semester. It came six months after similar actions had threatened to cancel the winter semester.
The workers backed off following talks with the NTUA’s academic authorities, appeals from students and from Education Minister Andreas Loverdos, as well as promises that all staff who have joined the mobility scheme would be rehired.
