Greece's Population Decreased

Greece Population GrowthAccording to Eurostat figures, population in Greece was 11.062 million on January 1, 2013  and dropped to 10.992 million on January 1, 2014.
The new figures show that during the previous year, births in our country amounted to 94,100, while deaths reached 112,100. Meanwhile, the number of legal immigrants in Greece decreased by 52,000 people.
Greece along with Italy and Germany present some of the lowest birth rates in the European Union (8.5%) followed by Romania (8.8%). The highest rates are recorded in Ireland (15%) and France (12.3%).
Among the countries of the European Union, the highest death rate is recorded in Bulgaria (14.4%) and Latvia (14.3%), and the lowest in Cyprus (6%) and Ireland (6.5%)
The EU population from 505.6 million in January 1, 2013 rose to 507.4 million in January 1, 2014 as births amounted to 5.075 million and deaths to 4,999,200. The number of immigrants in Europe increased by 653,100 people.
A research conducted by the University of Thessaly in March showed that Greece holds one of the highest aging rates in Europe. Only Italy and Germany present higher rates of aging population.
The percentage of the elderly in Greece increased significantly, from 16.7% to 19.4%, which is higher than the EU average (17.5% in 2011).
