Papoulias Signs the Law on Small PPC

Papoulias_DEHOn Friday afternoon, the President of the Hellenic Republic Karolos Papoulias signed the law concerning the privatization of 30% of the Public Power Corporation (PPC).
The signing of the law cancels the intention of opposition SYRIZA party leader Alexis Tsipras to ask Papoulias’ intervention to the Greek government’s plans. Despite the recent developments, Tsipras will still ask to meet with the President of the Republic.
Tsipras is opposing the privatization of PPC and has claimed that the coalition government acts in an undemocratic way and violates Greece’s Constitution.
Earlier on Friday, a discussion in Parliament on the proposals by opposition parties for a debate on a referendum regarding the privatization of 30% of PPC, the so-called “small PPC,” ended without their approval.
The Parliament rejected the request of the opposition parties to hold a referendum on “small PPC” unanimously, since the opposition parties chose not to participate in the voting process.
The discussion, which began in the Parliament on Friday, ended when PASOK and New Democracy coalition government MPs voted against the referendum and left-wing SYRIZA, Independent Greeks, and Communist Party (KKE) MPs walked out of the building and did not attend the session.
The opposition MPs boycotted the discussion, called by coalition lawmakers, after deeming it to be a “parody” and a “deeply undemocratic constitutional aberration.” The meeting was proposed by the government majority and it was vehemently opposed by the opposition parties.
