evangelismos hospitalThe patient who accused the 60-year-old heart surgeon and director of Evangelismos Hospital, Greece, for bribery, passed away in the hospital.
The 67-year-old man, whose story came to light last Thursday, passed away on Monday, July 14 in the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital, where he was being hospitalized after he underwent surgery. According to hospital staff, the man suffered a heart attack after his open heart surgery.
The pensioner had been the victim of extortion by his heart surgeon at Evangelismos Hospital, who refused to operate on him for 18 days, until he received the money he had requested.
The unlucky man had to undergo open heart surgery. After the alleged bribery of the heart surgeon, another surgeon had to perform the operation, however, a few hours after surgery, the pensioner died in the ICU.
His relatives complain that the surgery delay was fatal for the patient. In fact, after the death of the 67-year-old man, who underwent quadruple-bypass surgery, a particularly difficult operation, his relatives came in contact with Greek Police to inform the authorities of his death. Police have requested an autopsy as well as histological and toxicological examinations.
Last week, the patient made statements to local media regarding the incident where he spoke of the director of Evangelismos Hospital, calling him a “common blackmailer.”
Describing the incident, the patient said that he went to Evangelismos Hospital after a heart attack, and during that difficult time, the Greek doctor requested 1,500 euros in order to perform the operation. After explaining his financial situation and making it clear that he was not able to pay the extra money, the doctor insisted that there was no way to perform the surgery unless he received the 1,500 euros.
The doctor is being prosecuted for the felony of extortion. However, when he was brought before the prosecutor he claimed that the money he had on him was his own.
