Greek Island Shifts After Earthquake

EarthquakeThe 6.8 magnitude earthquake that shook the Greek island of Lemnos on May 24 did not cause serious problems. The island survived the earthquake without major damages of injuries. However, scientists discovered that after the earthquake, Lemnos moved 5 cm closer to the neighboring island of Agios Efstratios.
The indicators of GPS in Greece and Turkey went mad showing large changes in the island’s soil. The authorities provided data showing a displacement of the island to the west. The scientists estimate that the large rift of the area “broke”  leading to the shifting of the Greek island. The earthquake that struck off the coast of northern Greece was mainly felt in the islands of Lemnos and Samothrace as well as in Turkey and Bulgaria. However, there were no reports of serious casualties or damages.
