UN Urges for Solution on FYROM Name Dispute

nimetzMatthew Nimetz, the United Nations mediator in the dispute between Greece and Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) met with FYROM Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski in Skopje.
“We have been at this for a long time and I do think this is an issue that needs to get resolved. With some of the problems that have developed throughout the world it is really important to try to resolve issues between countries rather than let them fester on and on,” said Nimetz after their meeting.
Nimetz noted that he did not have any concrete proposal but just “some ideas” regarding the ongoing name dispute. Moreover, the FYROM government did not present a new position on the issue. However, he claimed that their meeting was substantial.
The UN envoy urged for an immediate solution saying: “The identity is something that I’m not negotiating. Peoples have identities and the UN does not negotiate the identities. People create their own identities through their actions and culture.”
Nimetz is arriving in Athens on Wednesday on a two-day visit and he is due to meet with Evangelos Venizelos, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister.
The name dispute between Greece and FYROM has been a controversial issue for the two countries for the past 21 years, since the dissolution of Yugoslavia.
