One of Greece's Most Famous Beaches Is Being Destroyed

Lalaria beach on Skiathos Island, Greece
Local residents and tourists are gradually destroying Lalaria, an impressive beach on the Greek island of Skiathos that is famous across the world for its natural beauty. It has been noted that locals take the white pebbles from the beach to decorate their yards or to sell them, while visitors take them as souvenirs.
Geologists claim that it will take thousands of years for the beach to fill again with pebbles. In an effort to protect the beach, Skiathos Port Authority has threatened to impose fines from 400 to 1.000 euros for those who take the white pebbles.
The cultural association “Skiathos” has placed on the beach warning signs and equipped tourist boats that operate in the area with briefing notes explaining the potential catastrophic results.
“The landscape has been largely altered and now the situation is irreversible. During summer the beach empties from pebbles as everyone is interested in collecting them and not in enjoying the scenery. This can no longer continue,” said Thodoris Tzoumas on behalf of the “Skiathos” association.
According to the decision signed by the local port authority of Skiathos Greek and foreign tourists caught with the white pebbles of the beach will have to pay strict fines.
