Cyprus Tourism Organization Launches 'Cypriot Breakfast' Initiative to Promote Local Products

Cyprus Tourism Organization is trying to find new ways to appeal to international tourists. CTO’s latest move involves a culinary tourism initiative that aims to promote the country’s local products.
CTO hopes that “the diversity of this kind of tourism will hopefully appeal to international tourists and help increase product sales and business revenues.”
In collaboration with Travel Foundation, UK and the Cyprus Sustainable Tourism Initiative (CSTI), CTO has launched a pilot program as a first step in achieving the establishment of culinary tourism in Cyprus. Several hotels in the area of Paphos will be participating in the program. Their first goal will be to promote the Cypriot breakfast to tourists.
As part of the program, hotel staff will be participating in seminars about the Cypriot breakfast and the island’s local products.
“There are already 16 hotels in Paphos participating in the project, we are expecting at least 20, but at the moment it is difficult because it is a high season for the hotels and they are too busy to take the course,” said CTO official Monica Liatiri.
She also added that they expect more hotels to join the program starting September 2014.
During these seminars, chefs will be taught how to incorporate Cypriot traditional products in their food, such as anari cheese, epsima, fresh goat milk or carob syrup. Meanwhile restaurant staff will expand their knowledge about the products to be able to promote them to tourists.
CTO is hoping that this move will help in showing tourists how Cypriot products can be used so that they are more willing to bring them home or maybe even seek them in their local supermarkets.
