Father Says Son Videotaped Beating

car burned
The parents of a 39-year-old food delivery worker whose burned remains were discovered in a car near the town of Astros in the Peloponnese last Friday, will face murder charges on Tuesday.
In a story that made front-page news all over Greece, the victim’s 75-year-old father and mother, 67, are expected to repeat their claim that their son used to beat them.
According to reports, the son, who lived in Attica, used to visit his parents frequently, although the family relationship was not good. According to neighbors, there were many fights between the young man and his father and some times they resulted in beatings. Reports also suggest that the son was “stealing” his father’s pension and beating his mother.
Last Easter, the 39-year-old allegedly tied the couple to their bed and videotaped himself beating them. The father claimed that he could not bear the beatings and blackmail any longer, and after a fight on August 15, he shot him with his gun. He then decided to hide the traces of his act. He put the body of his son in his car, drove to a remote area and burned it. He even removed the license plates from his son’s vehicle in order not to be recognized. However, residents of the area called the fire department to report the fire.
When firemen found the body, they immediately called the police. After investigating the scene and the family, police arrested the father and four family members who assisted him on the crime: the victim’s mother, his 71-year-old uncle, his 70-year-old aunt and his 53-year-old brother-in-law.
On Monday, three relatives of the victim – two aunts and an uncle – testified in connection with the killing and were released.
