Terror Suspect on Hunger Strike, Demands Transfer to Korydallos Prison

korydalos31-year-old Antonis Stamboulos, accused of being a member of the guerrilla group Revolutionary Struggle, announced on Tuesday morning that he is going on a hunger and thirst strike in a bid to pressure authorities to transfer him to Korydallos Prison in Athens, Greece.
On the anarchist website Indymedia, Stamboulos claimed that he is currently being held at a transfer cell at the Athens police headquarters, refuting earlier reports that he was being held at Korydallos. He expressed his concern that his extended stay in police custody could mean that he will be transferred to a prison located far away from Athens in order to serve the maximum 18-month term of his pre-trial custody. In that case, it would be difficult for his family and legal advisers to visit him.
“I am warning that I will not accept going anywhere other than Korydallos, near my family and my lawyer. I state that I am starting, as of now, a hunger and thirst strike and I am warning that the only way they will take me out of here is by dragging me out,” he said.
Stamboulos was arrested in the Vyronas area of Athens last Wednesday night. Greek police found him in possession of a roof rack of a car believed to have been used in a bombing outside the Bank of Greece last April. He was also carrying a list of planned targets which included the offices of New Democracy and leading Greek businessmen.
