In a conversation Thursday with Cypriot President Nikos Anastasiades in Milan, Vladimir Putin deemed unacceptable “any violation of the sovereign rights of the Republic of Cyprus,” according to Cypriot government spokesman Nikos Christodoulides.

The two leaders met in a “very friendly and cordial atmosphere” at a Thursday dinner hosted by the president of the Italian Republic. The gathering was attended by all leaders currently present at the Asian-European Summit Meeting in Milan.

In light of progress made in Thursday’s dinner discussion, today’s meeting between the two leaders has been cancelled.

According to Mr. Christodoulides, today’s meeting was intended to address bilateral relations between Cyprus and Russia, relations between the EU and Russia, as well as recent developments in Cyprus in the wake of encroaching Turkish designs on the Cypriot AOZ.

“Mr. Putin reiterated Russia’s position both as regards to the solution of the Cyprus problem and the right of the Cypriot Republic to take advantage and exploit the natural resources in the AOZ area,” the Cypriot government spokesman added.

The two leaders agreed to be in close contact and discuss any further developments in a meeting in the coming months.
