PASOK Opposes Govt Plans for Changes in Public Sector Wages

Greek coalition government partner PASOK declared its opposition regarding the new pay structure in the public sector after the plan was leaked to the media.

The party, which used to rule Greece for more than three decades, attacked Administrative Reform Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis directly, underlining that he should “learn to consult more with coalition partners and spend less time leaking information to the media.”

Earlier today, Mitsotakis, speaking to Skai radio, denied that he is the source of the leaked plan and called PASOK for a calm debate. He insisted that there is not going to be a significant drop in public sector wages as a result of the planned changes and that cuts will affect only a small number of them. He also said that, currently, employees join the public sector and enjoy “high salaries in comparison to the private sector” but they leave with relatively lower salaries. Finally, the Minister underlined that now is the time to introduce more pay grades.
