Cyprus Lifer Asks for Parole After 27 Years in Prison

Panayiotis-KafkarisThe parole board will rule on Monday, November 10, whether Cyprus’ longest-serving convict Panayiotis Kafkaris can be released on parole, Philenews said on Saturday.
In 1987, Kafkaris was sentenced to three life terms for the triple murder of Limassol businessman Panicos Michail and his two underage children.
Kafkaris has been in prison for 27 years. Aged 69 now, he had taken his case to the European Court of Human Rights. This set in progress, a change in the law which allows convicts serving a life sentence to apply for parole after serving 12 years. In his application to the parole board, Kafkaris cited his good conduct in prison, his age and the 27 years he has served in jail, according to Cyprus Weekly.
According to the court case, a man who remains unknown, had given Kafkaris 1,000 Cypriot pounds in order to kill Panicos Michail. The convict was 41 years old at the time.
Kafkaris was sentenced for the premeditated murder of Michail and his two sons. He had put a bomb in Michail’s car and the bomb exploded when the businessman started the engine to take the two boys to school.
