Greek PM Meets With Govt VP Ahead of Troika Meeting in Paris

Yet another meeting was held earlier today at the government headquarters between Greece’s Prime Minister Antonis Samaras and government Vice President and Foreign Minister Evangelos Venizelos, ahead of the negotiations with Troika representatives tomorrow in “neutral ground,” in Paris, France.

According to a Finance Ministry press release, the aim of the meeting is to explore the possible ways to achieve the desired acceleration of the Greek program’s final evaluation as well as planning the day after the country leaves its EU/IMF bailout program. Furthermore, according to sources close to the Ministry, the Greek representatives travel to Paris having a plan of further spending cuts of around one billion euros, hoping that this new proposal will bridge the gap for 2015’s financial deficit. According to the International Monetary Fund, the financial deficit for the coming year totals some 2.5 billion euros.

The government’s proposal, which was tabled in today’s Samaras–Venizelos meeting, is based on limiting the grants to be given to local authorities and higher education institutions. By presenting these, the Greek government expects that it will manage to curb the lenders’ pressure on pension cuts.

“We are heading to Paris to conclude with the evaluation’s date and agree over the next day,” Finance Ministry sources leaked, declaring that “the bailout program will not be extended.”

Samaras will also meet with Finance Minister Gikas Hardouvelis.
